All these great resources and notes derived from the Introduction to 3D Printing Workshop at Learning 2.014, run by Craig Stevenson, DT Teacher, NIST International School, Bangkok.

3D printing is a resource that is becoming increasingly more accessible to schools. Student ideas can be quickly realized with a basic knowledge of how to manipulate CAD software, which lends itself clearly to secondary Design and Technology curriculums. What if teachers of other subject disciplines and age groups could utilize this technology to enrich learning and improve understanding of concepts? This session will present free CAD software available to schools and demonstrations of how it and the technology can be used. Together we will explore and brainstorm ways in which units can be developed to include the technology, for various subject areas and school levels. Allowing time to experiment with the software, you will have the opportunity to design and create your ideas using CAD and 3D printing. By the end of the conference participants will be able to pickup a 3D printed object of their creation!
All 3D printable files are STL files

Types of filament
  • ABS non-toxic (used for toys)

Thingiverse: Free platform for making/sharing CAD files. Tonnes of stuff here

Meshmixer will allow you to convert SketchUp files to STL and join files into new objects
